Just over 1,600 of the nation’s 27,000 high schools – or about 6 percent – made the cut for the Newsweek list, which picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests.

Newsweek Magazine compiled this list by taking the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge (AICE) tests given at a school each year, then divided that number by the number of graduating seniors each spring. Since 1998, Newsweek has collected this data in conjunction with the Washington Post.
