Dip into Dreamy Urban Pools and Swim Spas

Summer is in full swing and what better way to cool off during the day or warm up on a summer night than in a pool or spa? Alas, not everyone has the space for an Olympic-sized pool in their backyard. Urbanites and central dwellers simply do not have the space. Plus, even if you do have the room, it is a major construction project that many HOAs may deny from the start. However, the newest trend in watery recreation and relaxation offers a smaller alternative: the urban pool and swim spa.

Big Fun on a Small Scale

Urban pools are typically two or three times the size of a standard hot tub, but designed just like a traditional pool. They can fit in just about any backyard and are far less demanding in terms of upkeep, energy and water usage. These pint-sized pools come in all shapes – a narrow lap lane, a perfect square, s-shaped or octagon – whatever your heart desires for the space you have.

A swim spa is usually a little smaller than an urban pool and retains the design aesthetic of a hot tub, but larger, with room to push off from all sides, and special jets that create optimal resistance for the stationary swimmer and seating for up to 12 people!

Above and Below

If you’re looking to add an urban pool or swim spa to your home, you have a sea of options to dive into. Choose between an above-ground pool surrounded by beautiful stacked stone or high-end porcelain or glass tile for an ultra-sleek look. Another option that goes great with above- or below-ground pools is beautiful wood decking, which can be complemented by a gazebo-style roof. For a modern and sophisticated slant, mix your mediums with stacked stone and wood decking – and those cool infinity-pool effects that bring the water right to the edge can still be used for mini pools. Some sit well above ground with single-lane pools that are integrated seamlessly with an elevated deck for a luxurious space just outside your door.

For cost-conscious Homeowners looking for a simpler approach, a traditional cement deck can be used for these diminutive swimming holes. A cement structure can be built below and above ground for a minimalist look. For swim spas, traditional acrylic and other composite shells will do.

The urban pools of today are not just on trend, but smart, too. Smaller-sized pools require less energy to heat and less water to fill. Just a few of the bells and whistles available include surround-sound audio systems, mood lighting and built-in ozone purification systems that require fewer chemicals.

Whatever direction you take with your tiny pool or swim spa, you’re sure to enjoy countless hours of fun and entertaining with the whole family – and maybe a few guests, too.
