In 2007, the U.S. government enacted legislation to force light bulb manufacturers to produce more energy-efficient offerings by setting maximum wattage requirements. The standards have gradually increased since then and will meet their peak requirements by 2020, meaning the lights will forever go out on some of our old-standard favorites, the incandescent and halogen light bulbs.
Luckily, light bulb companies have enhanced their offerings to provide that cozy, warm light that is also more energy efficient and has a longer lifespan.
CFLs: The Curly Bulbs
It’s No Accent-dent
Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs were the first replacement to incandescent bulbs. Distinguishable by the curly, screw-like top, these bulbs provide more visible light and are therefore more practical where lighting is left on for long, extended periods of time or in hard to reach places.
The Department of Energy estimates CFLs last about eight to 10 times longer and use about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. For example, a typical CFL can pay for itself in energy savings in less than nine months and continue to save you money each month. Think of how many light bulbs you have in your home and you can see how these savings really add up!
CFLs are available in a plethora of sizes and shapes, and now include options to mimic the warm light that made incandescent so popular.
LED: The New Frontier
LED (Light-emitting Diode) is the light bulb leading the way in the market. More and more Customers are choosing LED, not just because of their energy efficiency, but their versatility. LED lights can be used any place an incandescent light bulb was used: indoor, outdoor and anywhere lights are left on for extended periods of time.
According to the Department of Energy, LED bulbs use 75% less energy and can last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lights, providing up to 25,000 hours of light. To put that in perspective, you could leave the lights on for three years before having to change a bulb. They also come in an array of colors and brightness which allows for Homeowners to achieve that warm light but keep money in their pockets long-term.
You may never have thought too much about light bulbs in the past, but having the right bulb can make all the difference about how you see your home.
